SEOContest2008
SEOContest2008 is the title for a search engine optimisation competition using
the keyword: "SEOContest2008". There is a prize of $1000 for the highest ranking
site.
What is "search engine optimisation"?
According to an article in Wikipedia, Search engine optimization (or SEO) "...is
the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from
search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic")
search results for targeted keywords". In this instance, we are trying
to gain volume & traffic based solely upon the keyword: SEOContest2008.
SEO contests probably dont count as "organic" being that those involved
are purely after the top spot on Google, rather than providing content for visitors,
but the money would be nice, right? ^^
What do you have to do to win?
By the end of march 2008, this site has to be ranked number one on Google for
the searched term of SEOContest2008.
What are you doing as far as achieving this goal?
No idea really! SEO is new to me! However, I understand there are some fundamentals
to search engine optimization and I am trying them out here.
What follows is my attempt at some seo.
- The page states the keyword of SEOContest2008.
- The H1 tag also has SEOContest2008, following the theme of the page.
- The meta tags for keywords & description include references to the page
content. The style sheet is named seocontest2008.css
- I have used the keyword a number of times on this page, hopefully, without
over use and making it look "spammy"
- H2 tags have been used to make the page logical to a crawler (come on Googlebot!),
leading it to sentances containing the word SEOContest2008.
- Created an internal link to a page that has the title (& filename) of
"An
internal link on a site about SEOContest2008". Why? I read somewhere
internal links are good!
- Need to gain some inbound links, good PR ones if possible. It's better,
I understand, if I dont have to reciprocate them but if need be, then so be
it.
- As small as this site is, a Google sitemap will be created and uploaded.
- Going to finish with the <address> tag. Not sure if it has any value,
I read it is "old fashioned" but hey what have I got to lose!
- Not forgetting, of course, to add my link back to the UK
webmaster forum seo contest, which is required for entry to the competition.
